This week in math we continue learning how to divide using 2-digit divisors. On Friday, we had “flash cards” drawn on the side of our worksheet with the multiplication facts for 36 and 54. Those “flash cards” helped us on our first day of dividing by 2-digit divisors. Monday we begin using “Try-land”. This a place where we try to predict what division fact will work, and then multiply it out to see if it is the best choice. Students are getting better and better at completing long division problems, but we will need to spend most of this week learning how to make it work with those 2-digit divisors.

Upcoming Events:

This week in math we forge ahead in long division concepts. On Tuesday we will discuss and practice when to use zeros in the quotient. Wednesday we will look at choosing our computation method. That simply means deciding if you should solve a long division problem mentally, by using paper/pencil, or by using a calculator. Thursday we “dive” into interpreting the remainder. When a student is solving story problems using long division and the answer ends up with a remainder, they have a choice to make. Should they: drop the remainder, increase the quotient by one, or use the remainder in the answer by creating a fraction. The correct decision depends on the math situation. On Friday we begin working with 2-digit divisors.

As we return to school, our first unit of study will be division. We will begin by using hands-on manipulatives to model what division is all about. On Thursday we will do basic division: divide the tens, then divide the ones. Emphasis will be placed on the relationship between division and multiplication. Friday we will get into problems where regrouping is necessary because when dividing  things don’t always come out “even”.

This week in math we continue our Data and Graphing unit. We will be making a circle graph on Monday. Tuesday we will practice graphing ordered pairs. Wednesday we will see Bill Nye the science Guy in action explaining probability in the fun way he always explains things to students. Thursday we will work on pictographs. Friday will be spent trying to make sure all students have completed their graphing and data packets.  We are almost to Christmas break already!!!

This week in math we continue our adventure with Statistics and Probability. On Monday we will conduct an experiment involving dice.  Did you know that if you roll 2 dice there are more ways to roll a 7 than any other sum? Students will collect data as they experiment. Tuesday they will organize their results by making a double bar graph. Their next job is to use the graphs to analyze their results. We will learn about line plots on Wednesday. I am in need of several bags of Tootsie Pops to conduct an experiment involving sampling WITHOUT replacement on Thursday. If you can donate a bag for your child’s class please send it to school with them as soon as possible.

This week in math we begin our adventure with Statistics and Probability.  We will take notes on Monday and practicing finding the mean, median, and mode on Tuesday.  Wednesday we will conduct an experiment involving sampling with replacement.  Thursday we will go into the computer lab and graph the results from our experiment.  Friday we will conduct an experiment with dice.  Most students really like this unit, as there are lots of hands-on experiments to conduct and results to graph.

Math

We will continue working with multiplication this week.  I noticed last week that some students really know their facts quite well, and others are struggling to remember them.  Please work with your child on memorizing those facts that are still hard for him/her to remember.  We are going to be working on multiplying by 2-digit numbers this week.  The problem solving strategy for this chapter is “evaluating an answer for reasonableness.”  Boy is this an important skill!  Many times students forget to stop and think about whether or not the answer they obtained even makes sense. We plan to  work on the chapter pretest Thursday and Friday of this week. I’d like to give the test Monday, Nov. 21st before we leave for Thanksgiving Break.

Math

The chapter 4 Algebra test was given last Thursday.  Self-evaluations were filled out by the students on the back of their Friday notes. Check it out and make sure to sign the bottom of the note, so I know you have seen it.  Our next unit of study is multiplication.  Students need to review multiplication facts to see if there are any they need to practice.  Friday we discussed patterns in multiples.  This week will be spent multiplying by one and two digit numbers.

On Monday  we will discuss how to write an equation to help with problem solving when it comes to story problems.   Tuesday we will take the chapter 4 pretest for “practice” not for points. Students will be allowed to take this home as a study guide. Wednesday will be our chapter 4 test.   Thursday and Friday we will begin our multiplication unit. If your child has gotten a little “rusty” on their multiplication facts, this would be a good time to start practicing them again.

Student Teacher

Last week, Mrs. Beck, a student teacher from MSU, began a 5 week rotation of student teaching in math on the Black Team.  I am confident that she will do a great job. She is eager to learn about teaching math and wants to help the students.
